Verona. L’Aida – 16 – 17 June

On 16 and 17 June, the 100th edition of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival will be inaugurated with the new production of Aida, directed, scenery and costumes by the multifaceted artist Stefano Poda, at his debut in the Arena.

The opening, spread over two evenings, brings with it pleasant confirmations, such as the participation of the opera’s golden couple formed by the Divina Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazof, and the world-vision screening of the first evening live on RAI television.

Aida, the ‘queen’ opera of the Arena di Verona, will be staged with 14 performances until 8 September 2023.

Composed in 1869 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Suez Canal, Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida tells the love story of the young Aida, daughter of the King of Ethiopia but enslaved in the retinue of Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh of Egypt. In love (and reciprocated) with the valiant Radamès, betrothed to Amneris, Aida will follow him to his tragic death, showing him love and loyalty. The first performance of Aida, brought to the stage by tenor Giovanni Zenatello, was a success: the cosmopolitan audience present in the amphitheatre experienced an evening of unique emotions.
