Selva di Cadore. “Carneval inte Selva” – Sunday 26/01

Carnival in Selva di Cadore … stories, say that it began in the first post-war period in 1922, when many people, after a period of fear and confinement, went out into the streets again. So much so that it was the first memorable carnival. On January 6, the conscripts went to pick up the carnival at pescul “sa al Nat”, which as tradition said, arrived in the valley via the Forada fork from San Vito.

On Shrove Tuesday, the girls went through the streets of the town wearing the so-called “màscora da la farìna” of the flour, with an old handkerchief on their shoulders, they went from door to door asking for a handful of flour and a few eggs. This collection was used to prepare the “fuòie rostide” or crostoli and the “grafògn” for Thursday.

Shrove Thursday was dedicated to masks. We started in the square of Selva, with two “Matazìgn” together with the “Lachè”, who ran around the carnival in procession. In addition, there were some ugly masks: the “Patafògn”, dressed in rags with their faces completely black. We continued along the “Passadora”, the climb that from Selva leads to Santa Fosca, arriving up to Pascùl. Among all the masks, one stood out with a hat decorated with pine cones, the “King of the forest”. We danced in the square of Santa Fosca, accompanied by musicians and together with all the participants and people who had come to see the Carnival.
