Soave lies at the foot of the Lessini Mountains and is a charming medieval town. The architectural features stand out from the Castle and the numerous palaces built during that period. The Manor House dominates the entire area and the curtain walls entirely surround the ancient village. The Mura Scaligere are interspersed with 24 mighty towers with ‘Ghibelline’ battlements.
The Castle is a typical military construction of the Middle Ages: it stands on Mount Tenda, and consists of a high tower, the Mastio, around which the rounds of the walls are divided into three courtyards.
Along Via Roma, the heart of the town, are the main monuments of Soave. You cannot miss a visit to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Palazzo di Giustizia and the Palazzo del Capitano, seat of the Soave Town Council. Pushing outside the walls, north of the town, we also suggest a stop in Borgo Bassano to visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bassanella.
Soave is also known the world over for its white wine of the same name: on the gentle hillsides, the garganega grape is the base for Soave DOC, Soave DOC classico, Soave classico DOCG and Recioto di Soave DOCG wine.
In May, during the ‘Medieval Festival of the White Wine of Soave’, the town’s mediaevality is celebrated together with the Soave white wine, while the Garganega grape is celebrated in September during the Grape Festival, the oldest in Italy. Soave also obtained the Orange Flag quality mark from the TCI in 2003 for its historical and environmental beauty.
