MMM: Reinhold Messner’s Museum “on the clouds” in the Dolomites

There’s a museum in the Dolomites, which is literally in the clouds and crossing its threshold is not just any feat – you must first have made an excursion to the top of Mount Rite (2181 m): it’s the Messner Mountain Museum (MMM), founded by the famous mountain climber in July 2015, which is actually part of a circuit of six museums designed and dedicated to the mountains.

The so called “museum on the clouds”, reachable by foot or by shuttle bus, taking the path that leads to Mount Rite from Passo Cibiana (located between Pieve di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo), is specifically dedicated to the theme of mountaineering and the element “rock”. Once you reach the top, with a 360 degree view of the Dolomites, you can have a meal at the Dolomites refuge and take your ticket to the museum, built in an old war fortress. The museum offers: the thematic route with the history of mountaineering in the Dolomites, the nature trail with fossil finds dating back to 250 million years ago and Messner’s personal collection of paintings representing the Dolomites, from Romanticism to Contemporary Art.
