The legend of the Madonna dell’Angelo in Caorle

The ancient church of Madonna dell’Angelo in Caorle, originally dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is an ancient sanctuary overlooking the Adriatic Sea, with a spectacular view. The current church, dated 1751, was built on an earlier religious wooden structure erected around the year 1000. Today, inside, the church preserves a stone throne, which is part of an evocative history.

Legend has it that in the early middle ages, while at sea, some fishermen saw a statue of the Virgin Mary lying on a small throne made of stone that floated in front of their eyes. The fishermen tried to take the simulacrum but only a group of children succeeded and so the statue was placed in the Cathedral of Caorle, from which it disappeared, to be found again in the small church on the sea, which took the name of “Madonna dell’Angelo”.

Today the sanctuary is a destination for pilgrims from all over the world and inside you can still see the famous stone throne of the legend. The church is open every day during the winter months; during the summer it is open from early morning until 11 pm. Not to be missed, every five years, on the second Sunday of September, the procession of the statue of Our Lady, which is transported by sea in a typical Venetian traditional boat, among the prayers and celebrations of the population.
